Then and Now, Leyden-Indiana

1934-Leyden Avenue @ Indiana Avenue, view northwest

2021–the same location

Our location is at 13700-south.  The streetcar in the older photo is turning onto diagonal Leyden Avenue, where it will run for one block to its terminal at 138th Street and the Chicago city limits.   South of 138th in Dolton, Leyden Avenue becomes Lincoln Avenue.  Lincoln was also the original name of the street’s one block in Chicago, but it was changed to Leyden to avoid confusion with the North Side’s Lincoln Avenue.

Eighty-seven years have seen the usual changes here—no streetcars, smoother pavement, better street lights and traffic signals, a few more trees, and a missing building.
