Then and Now, Noble-Division

1955–Noble Street @ Division Street, view north

2021–the same location

At 1400-west, Noble Street was once a busy arterial with a streetcar line.  This was the heart of the city’s Polish community, centered around Saint Stanislaus Kostka Church.  By 1955, though the streetcars were gone, Noble still looked much like it had looked for decades.  That was about to change.

The Northwest (Kennedy) Expressway obliterated the northern part of Noble Street, converting it into a local street. In 2021 Saint Stan’s remains, though short a cupola lost in a lightning strike.  “Cheery-beery” Edelweiss Beer, advertised on the side of that four-story building, is only a memory.
