Belmont @ Central: If memory serves, the shop with the awning in the left foreground is Andes Candies, which also had a soda fountain. I believe there was another Andes Candies, no soda fountain, across the street on the southeast corner. I stood on that corner every morning and afternoon going to and coming from high school.

Would love to see a shot of that corner as it is today.

To see the southeast corner today, go to Google, put in “5555 W. Belmont Ave, Chicago”, and click. That will take you to Google Earth. There click on “street view” for a contemporary view. This works for just about any city address.

Love your photo’s! Your photo of Clark and Belmont: It appears to be taken from the North side of Belmont facing south is that right? I lived in and around that neighborhood during the 80’s/90’s and the Bank was on the left (between Clark and Halsted) and was a part of the large triangle of land that ended south at about Barry as Clark crosses Halsted. OR was there another bank, torn down before? The only place I can think of was the NW Corner of Belmont and Clark. Thanks

I took the picture from the middle of Belmont, facing east/northeast. Halsted Street crosses Belmont just east of the photo location. There was a bank on the south side of Belmont, and you can see its wall in the photo. However, the last time I drove by there, that bank had been torn down, and new construction was underway.

As someone who grew up in Belmont-Cragin in the 1950s and ’60s and moved to Lakeview in the early 1970s, both main drags, from one end to the other, are so familiar to me. Great memories of Belmont and Central as well as Lincoln Avenue.
