Then and Now, Cottage Grove-98th

Though streetcar lines usually operated down the center of a street, in some places it was more convenient to lay the tracks on the side of the thoroughfare.  That’s the case in the older photo.  Here south of 95th Street, where Cottage Grove Avenue parallels the Illinois Central right-of-way, the streetcar tracks run down the west side of the street.

In our time the streetcar tracks are long gone and paved over.  And looking at the contemporary photo, you might not know that IC trains still run just behind the trees.
