Then and Now, Howard-Ashland

1930–Howard Street @ Ashland Avenue, view west
2021–the same location

We are looking west on Howard Street toward its intersection with Ashland Avenue—here, a local street.  By 1930 many businesses had been established on Howard near the North Side ‘L’ terminal.  Besides the bank and the fashion shop, there were a number of taverns catering to thirsty patrons from dry Evanston.

Today the buildings on the north side of this block have been cleared to make way for Willye B. White Park.  Across the street, other buildings were also razed, with the property now occupied by the Howard Garden.
