This was as far north as Lake Shore Drive went in 1938. Beyond Foster Avenue is beach. To the left in the 1938 photo is the Edgewater Beach Hotel complex. Look further up the shore to Bryn Mawr Avenue, and the Edgewater Beach Apartments is visible.
Lake Shore Drive was extended north to Hollywood Avenue in 1957. The Edgewater Beach Hotel is gone, but the Edgewater Beach Apartments still stands. And the drive itself now honors Chicago’s founder, Jean Baptiste Pointe Du Sable.
