Then and Now, 79th-Stony Island

1931–79th Street @ Stony Island Avenue, view east

2022–the same location

We are at the triple intersection of 79th Street with Stony Island and South Chicago Avenues. Down the block in the 1931 photo is the new 2,500-seat Avalon Theater. On the southeast corner of the intersection itself is the Kickapoo Inn Tavern, where my Dad heard the news of the Pearl Harbor attack ten years later.

Today the Kickapoo Inn is gone. The Avalon has become the Avalon Regal Theater. And over the intersection are ramps connecting to the Chicago Skyway.
