Then and Now, Yates-South Chicago

1935–Yates Boulevard @ South Chicago Avenue, view north

2021–the same location

In 1935, here at South Chicago Avenue and 87th Street, Yates Boulevard ended. A railroad embankment just south of the intersection was in the way. However, the Park District had plans to cut an underpass through, and extend its boulevard system to 100th Street and beyond. (On another note, check out the three cars parked off the pavement—do you think they got tickets?)

In 2021 Yates Boulevard still ends here. The underpass through the railroad was never built, and now the Chicago Skyway presents an additional barrier. South of here, Yates is merely a local street.
