Then and Now, Belmont-Sawyer

1959–Belmont Avenue @ Sawyer Avenue, view east
2021–the same location

The 1959 photo captures the construction of the Northwest (Kennedy) Expressway. Traffic on Belmont Avenue was diverted around the site while the overpass was being built. On streets with trolley buses like Belmont, that meant temporary overhead wires had to be strung along the bypass. I’m still looking for a photo of one of those electrified bypasses.

Today Belmont and Kedzie Avenues intersect directly under the far end of the Kennedy overpass. That was another complication the expressway builders had to deal with in 1959. Fortunately, they didn’t have to accommodate a trolley bus bypass for Kedzie.
