In 1908 this part of West Town was almost fully developed, though a few vacant lots remained. On the next block, the steeple of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church dominates the east side of Hoyne. Further south and across the street, the steeple of Zion’s Evangelical Society Church is just visible. Both these congregations had German roots.
Today St. John Evangelical Lutheran—minus the steeple—has been converted to condos. The former Zion’s Evangelical was torn down in 2014 and replaced by condos. This onetime German enclave is now part of Ukrainian Village.
