De-Mil Putting Course

The De-Mil Putting Course was located ar 6422 North Milwaukee Avenue, near the intersection of DEvon and MILwaukee Avenues.  When I played there in the early 1960s, a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet was on the corner, and the course wrapped around the back of it.  There’s an apartment building on the site today.

This was a pretty simple layout.  Friends told me that the owner’s teenage son regularly toured the eighteen holes in 30 strokes or less.  That was a great example of Local Knowledge.

The photo dates from 1979.  I had snapped a couple of pictures of the nearby Henry W. Rincker House and had one shot left on the roll of film.  A photo of the Rincker landmark is featured in my next book, so I decided to share this companion photo here.

John–You have a “next book?” Details, please! I bought three copies of “On This Day in Chicago History.”

I’m a long time follower of your blog. Today you make me smile with the De-Mil post.
I lived within walking distance of De-Mil and spent many of a summer evening during the 60’s/70’s there with a stop at Big “T” on the way home. I can still picture the soft yellow glow of the lights!
Do you know if De-Mil and the next door slot car racing/ archery place was owned by the same owner?

Thanks for reading. I believe that De-Mil was owned by a man named Dolatowski. I don’t know if he owned the other place.

Thanks for the memories… I still remember the golf – archery and game room although I was to young at the time to ever go there, The archery location sat Idle for many years after closing. The ORIGINAL KFC building — with some remodeling— is still there. For years it was a Real Estate Office… now a fast food restaurant called Blaze N Grill.
