Then and Now, 47th-Marshfield

Our location is just west of Ashland Avenue.  In 1950 47th-Ashland was the main shopping center near the Stock Yards—hence the neighborhood was known as Back-of-the-Yards.  The Peoples Theater, a onetime silent movie venue, is visible on the right side of the older photo.

Today the Stock Yards are gone.  A Walgreen’s stands on the site of the Peoples Theater.  Though much of the commercial strip still looks the same, the Polish and Lithuanian signs have been replaced by signs in Spanish.
