The 1945 photo shows the ribbon commercial development along the route of the State Street car line.  The Englewood branch of the South Side ‘L’ came through in 1907, spurring a construction boom of apartment buildings in the surrounding area.

The contemporary photo gives an indication of how empty the neighborhood has become.  The Dan Ryan Expressway removed a wide swath of housing a few blocks to the west, and urban decay has done the rest.  Though the Green Line ‘L’ continues to operate here, the State Street station has been gone since 1992.
