Though streetcars began running on 87th Street as early as 1915, this part of the South Side was still unevenly developed when the older picture was snapped. Traffic was so light that  stop signs were adequate at the intersection. A few blocks east of here, the Chicago Vocational School (CVS High School) was only four years old.

Today the Avalon Park neighborhood is residentially mature. The Chicago Skyway opened nearby in 1958, and has brought more traffic onto both 87th Street and Jeffery Boulevard.
