When the West Side was densely populated, 14th Street was a major thoroughfare.  Until 1948 it even had a streetcar line, 14th-16th, which ran on 14th Street between Damen and Jefferson.

Parts of 14th Street were closed when public housing was constructed east of Ashland.  This section was vacated more recently, and is now part of a Costco parking lot.  However, the renovated Pink Line (formerly the Douglas Park ‘L’) continues to run through the area.
