R.I.P. The Purple Hotel

Purple Hotel 01

They’ve finally started tearing down The Purple Hotel. First opened as the Lincolnwood Hyatt in 1962, the building has been vacant since 2007. In its prime the hotel played host to Perry Como, Barry Manilow, and other celebrities. Michael Jordan spent his first night as a Bulls rookie there in 1984.

Most of the media reports note that Allen Dorfman, a Teamsters Union financial consultant, was gunned down in the parking lot in 1983. I haven’t seen anything about the time The Lone Ranger was robbed at the hotel.

Last year the Lincolnwood Public Library raised $5,000 selling bricks from the hotel. No word yet on what’s going to be built on the site.
